Hungary
Le Morte d'ArthurHungary is identified as the homeland of Sir Urre, an adventurous knight whose enchanted wounds set in motion a seven-year search for the knight capable of healing him. Though the book gives little description of the country itself, its name marks the beginning of a journey through Christian lands that ends at King Arthur’s court and makes Hungary part of the romance’s geography of trial and recovery.
Hungary and Sir Urre
The narrative introduces Urre as a knight of Hungary who seeks deeds of renown wherever he hears of them. At a tournament in Spain, he fought Sir Alphegus, a Spanish earl’s son, and killed him. Before his death, Alphegus inflicted seven wounds on Urre: three on the head and four on the body and left hand. Alphegus’s mother, described as a powerful sorceress, then enchanted the wounds so that they would repeatedly fester and bleed and could not heal until the world’s best knight examined them.
The journey from Hungary
Urre’s mother placed him in a horse-litter and travelled with him, accompanied by his sister Felelolie and a page to tend the horses. For seven years she led him through Christian lands in search of a knight who could relieve his condition, but none succeeded. Their route brought them through Scotland and England, and eventually to King Arthur’s court at Carlisle near Pentecost. There, Urre’s mother publicly explained why she had brought him into the country and described the enchantment that made his healing depend on finding the best knight.
Narrative significance
Hungary functions as a point of departure rather than a developed setting: the account supplies Urre’s origin but no further description of the country. Its narrative importance lies in the distance crossed between his homeland and Arthur’s court, and in the long search that turns a tournament’s consequence into a test of the court’s reputation. The episode links Hungary to the romance’s recurring conjunction of knightly adventure and supernatural conditions, while making healing—not conquest—the destination of Urre’s journey.
